Clothing & Textile Recycling at Monclair Public Library

  • 1 min read

Instead of taking your clothing, shoes, linens, etc to a collection site, or worse, dumping them in the trash, RECYCLE THEM!

We now have a “GREEN BOX” located at the main branch building of Montclair public library at 50 S Fullerton Ave, Montclair, NJ 07042.

WHAT WE ACCEPT

We accept all clean clothing, shoes, hats and accessories. We also accept household items such as curtains, linens, towels, handbags and belts.

WHY RECYCLE TEXTILES?

Recycling post consumer textiles has environmental benefits and helps people who are in need. EPA reports that in 2010 textile waste was 13.5 million tons or 5.3% of total Municipal Solid Waste. (MSW.) Few communities have textile recycling programs, about 85% of textile waste goes directly to landfills, utilizing 4% of landfill space.  In 2009 only 1.3 million tons were recovered for recycling, and in 2010 only 2 million tons were recovered which represents only 15% of total textile waste.

WHERE DOES THE CLOTHING GO?

The clothing separated into 2 main categories:  All clothing that is in good and wearable condition is used as originally intended. It is distributed to our for-profit annon-profit partners.  Other materials are shredded into fibers and used as components to textile insulation.
